The 6 items everyone is wearing in New York that will lift your style today.

One of the best ways to know what is going to be trending in the fashion world in the coming months is to take to the streets of New York.

There's a reason it's considered the fashion capital of the world.

Whether they're grabbing groceries or heading to work, locals are very often seen creating trends instead of following them.

And while most of us aren't going to hop on a plane to the US to people watch, we can scroll through social media and the internet to see the pieces New Yorkers just can't get enough of.

With New York Fashion Week having just ended, let's go through the clothes and accessories that people were spotted wearing the most.

Oversized leather bomber jackets.

Apparently, the 2010s are back because bomber jackets are having a moment, but not the short, cropped variety that we're so used to seeing. Instead, this new style is more masculine and oversized, perfect for wearing on top of thick jumpers and scarves.

I recommend:

I love a baseball cap, so it's making me feel validated knowing that New Yorkers can't get enough either. While baseball caps never really went away, there has been a massive resurgence. We're seeing models like Kendall Jenner and Emily Ratajkowski wear them and they were all over attendees at New York Fashion Week shows.

I recommend:

Nothing helps beat that winter chill more than an overcoat. But because the people of New York like to keep things interesting, no one is wearing a monochrome coat. Instead, they're opting for ones with a checked pattern in various different colours.

I recommend:

Atmos&Here Curvy Marlowe Check Coat, $129.

Ballet flats.

Ballet flats have been slowly sneaking back in for a while now, but in 2024, they're going to be a full-blown trend. While it's controversial, the fashion world loves a good flat, especially one that is either two-tone or in a mary-jane style.

I recommend:

Rubi Gia Square Ballet, $39.99.

I like to think that statement handbags are popular right now thanks to Barbie. So many street style photos show people wearing colourful shoulder bags, or even love heart crossbodies, and I'm all for it. The interesting shapes and vibrant shades help make an otherwise simple outfit interesting. The only problem is, they might not fit your phone.

I recommend:

Eliya The Label Heart Purse, $99.

Maxi skirts.

This is a big one. Maxi skirts were spotted everywhere at New York Fashion Week, and in many different colours and designs. People were seen wearing polka dot skirts, sequined skirts and even sheer maxi skirts, so you have plenty of options to pick from.

I recommend:

AERE Draped Maxi Skirt, $120.
